ABSTRACT

The fashion designer discussed within the context of this chapter is dened as the person charged with leading the development of the new seasonal collection in a micro-, small-, or medium-sized business. In this context, the designer is typically considered to be a signicant and central member of a team and is chiey responsible for guiding the collection from early design ideas to the production of the sample range (Renfrew and Renfrew 2009). At the center of the creative process, the fashion designer is expected to direct and work with a number of specialist people and teams, with the aim of producing a collection on time, within budget and to market expectations. However, it is from this position of inuence that the fashion designer can steer and guide the team in making considered decisions, which can positively affect the way that garments are designed and produced.
