ABSTRACT

Jute is one of the natural bers grown abundantly in India and Bangladesh. This ber is very popular due to its successful use as a packaging and carpet backing material. Though this ber is grown much earlier in India, the British introduced the machinery and processing mill for jute yarn and fabrics. Jute-based products are still used in different applications. With the advancement of science and technology, the partial share of the jute market has been taken by the synthetic industry. Hence today, many of the jute-based conventional products are nding stiff competition in the global market. To overcome this, researches in different countries, mostly in jute-growing countries, have concentrated for its diversied applications (Gupta and Bhattacharyya, 1984; Singh et al., 2004; Debnath et al., 2008, 2009). Out of the different diversied applications, jute in fashion application has been covered in this chapter. The road map for jute-based apparel development, starting from raw jute ber to yarn, sustainable chemical modications of ber and yarn, fabric development, garment development, and nishing of such jute-based fabrics, has also been focused. The properties of the materials in the different processes involved in jute-based apparel manufacturing have also been covered. More precisely, details of design and development of jute-based apparels for sustainable development have as well been emphasized.
