ABSTRACT

When the Training Within Industry (TWI) courses were created during WWII, the developers ran hundreds of trials to find just the right formula for accomplishing successful training that had the widest impact in a short amount of time. What is more, they had to be able to scale the delivery so that its use could spread quickly throughout industry. After all, the war was on and the rapid ramp-up of industrial output in all sectors was imperative for victory. What we have found to be unequivocally true today, after more than 10 years of delivering TWI in manufacturing as well as in the health care, administrative, and service industries, is that this same formula that performed so well in wartime still works in a contemporary work environment. As we saw in Chapter 1, Japanese industry proved the effectiveness of this formula by embracing the TWI methods and utilizing them fully in the revitalization of their economy. Fortunately for us, the Japanese maintained the TWI practice in its original form so that we could rediscover it decades later and actually see it and know how it works. This would not have been possible just by studying the historical record.
