ABSTRACT
A body of literature has been accumulating in recent years, supporting the belief that introducing specific forms of diversification into an agroecosystem can have many beneficial effects (Chapter 16, pp. 223-226). This literature contradicts a basic principle of modern conventional agriculture: to simplify agroecosystems by eliminating both noncrop plants (usually referred to as weeds) and any insects.
