ABSTRACT

In this chapter examples of several practical problems in optical design will be discussed. They are selected to illustrate some o f the principles and devices discussed in the earlier chapters.

15.1. THE OPTICAL DESIGN PROCESS As in any design projects, it is desirable to follow a systematic procedure for most efficient development of an optical product. Of course, procedures cannot be too rigid and should be modified to be appropriate in a given situation. The following generalized procedure has been effective in a number of cases and is presented as a guide. The optical engineer must work closely with the respon sible system engineer and the project mechanical, electronic, or chemical engi neers on the project.
