ABSTRACT

Mixing processes and chemical reactions are coupled in turbulent flames, and this coupling influences the progress of reaction, the relationships among species, the formation of pollutants, and even the shape and stability of a flame. In this chapter we describe multiscalar diagnostic methods that have been applied to gain insights on the effects of turbulent mixing on flame chemistry and to provide quantitative data for validating turbulent combustion models. Our emphases is on simultaneous, temporally and spa­ tially resolved, point and line measurements of temperature, the concentra­ tions on all the major species, and concentrations of selected minor species, such as OH or NO.
