ABSTRACT
The term melanonychia is derived from the Greek words melas, for black (brown), and onyx, for nail, and simply means a (brown to) black nail. Although the term is neutral concerning the nature of the pigment causing this discoloration, most clinicians mean melanin pigmentation when speaking of melanonychia.
