ABSTRACT
As persistent, r-selected components of agroecosystems, weeds have a tendency to proliferate and compete with the crop for nutrients, water, or light. Some species can also inhibit crops allelopathically or provide habitat for herbivorous insects. To avoid serious yield losses, therefore, farmers typically devote a great deal of attention and resources to controlling weeds.
