ABSTRACT

As you’ll recall from Chapter 1, the bones that protect the spinal cord are called vertebrae and are named using a combination of letters and numbers. e spinal cord, based on changes to its internal morphology, is divided into four distinct sections: cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral. e vertebrae share this convention, and are also numbered according to position, i.e., the fth cervical vertebra is named C5. As shown in Fig. 4.1, there are 7 cervical vertebrae (C1 – C7), 12 thoracic (T1 – T12), ve lumbar (L1 – L5) and ve sacral (S1 – S5).
