ABSTRACT

We have categorized this disparate group of lymphadenopathies on the basis of their most prominent histological feature (Box 3.1). This is to some extent arbitrary, since some have overlapping features and these may vary at different stages of the disease. Biopsy is most likely to be performed in patients with persistent lymphadenopathy, often to exclude malignancy. Well-taken, well-fixed, whole lymph node biopsies are desirable in such cases because a number of reactive lymphadenopathies may closely mimic malignant lymphoma.
