ABSTRACT

Cardiovascular disease (CVD), including coronary heart disease, stroke, and peripheral arterial disease, is the number one cause of death globally, and according to the World Health Organization, CVD caused 17.5 million deaths in 2012, which is about 31% of the global total. More than 75% of these deaths occurred in low-and middle-income countries [1]. Organizations such as the European Society of Cardiology [2] and the American College of Cardiology [3] promote prevention strategies focused on the well-established manageable risk factors of tobacco use, obesity, physical inactivity, poor dietary habits, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia.
