ABSTRACT

As mentioned earlier, game engines (e.g., Unity) and digital dis-tribution have made independent game development economically viable. State machines (e.g., PlayMaker) make indie game creation possible for a whole new generation of developers. But what is indie? Is it simply a synonym for self-publishing? Or is a philosophy that entails seeing an artistic vision to completion, without the intrusion of crass commercial concerns? e latter denition begs the questions: Are games art? And, further, what is art?
