ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses that renewable wind, water, and sun energy sources are sustainable because they are renewable, clean, safe, and nearly carbon-free. The greatest challenge facing humanity is to transition to renewable energy as rapidly as possible to mitigate global climate change. Currently the growth of renewable energy production is slightly greater than the growth of the Total Primary Energy Supply (TPES), which consists of all energy sources people get energy directly from and excludes secondary energy sources such as electricity and hydrogen gas. Renewable energy will not increase market penetration unless it is cheaper than fossil fuels. Wind power has great potential as an energy source. It is renewable, has small carbon and water footprints, and produces no waste, giving it a small environmental impact throughout its life cycle. Biofuels are appealing because they can provide reliable, renewable baseload power with a small carbon footprint.
