ABSTRACT

Adolescents are defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as people aged between 10 and 19 years. The Lancet Commission on Adolescents 2016 analysis used a range of 10 to 24 years of age to cover the groups defined by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs as adolescents, youths, and young people. There is growing awareness of the importance of adolescent health and nutrition, and increasing recognition that investing in adolescents' health and well-being is essential to achievement of the post-2015 development agenda. Increased nutritional requirements during adolescence reflects the fact that growth during adolescence is faster than at any other time in an individual's life, with the exception of the first year. The rapid rate of growth during and following puberty results in adolescents having some of the highest energy and protein requirements of any age group.
