ABSTRACT
Patients at risk for suicide and those who harm themselves and attempt suicide are frequently brought to hospitals for help and treatment. The assessment includes the evaluation of the circumstances, stress, planning, and method employed. The examination of potential factors, which increase the risk of suicide (older age, male sex, single status, physical illness, and poor social support), severe depression, and psychosis is mandatory. The medical consequences of the suicidal attempt will have to be managed.
