ABSTRACT

A practical problem arises because implementing a large-scale survey by dint of multi-stage sampling takes a lot of time. In Indian major cities like Kolkata, Mumbai, and Delhi among others many people live, work and earn subsistence by various means without having legalized dwelling places. It is well-known that since the early 1950's through the initiatives of Prof. P. C. Mahalanobis, National Sample Survey Office as a government organization was conducting large-scale sample surveys throughout the urban and rural areas of India. In order to accomplish the associated task, every fifth year Urban Frame Surveys (UFS) are being carried out to construct blocks of urban areas of a roughly common number of about 1000 persons each. From each of the 128 artificially constructed UFS blocks in varying numbers researchers sampled 20 blocks by the simple random sampling with replacement method of sample selection.
