ABSTRACT

This chapter is dedicated to biodiesel production and properties in terms of available starting materials. A review of available feedstocks along with the possible impact of using different oils on biodiesel quality is reported. A part of the chapter is devoted to the description of two major International Standards regulating biodiesel properties: European EN and American ASTM. The meaning of every listed parameter is discussed as well as the main differences that exist between the two standards. Finally, a critical discussion about the factors affecting biodiesel quality is reported with particular attention to the presence of insoluble products and the possibility of preventing related problems.
