ABSTRACT
William Rowan Hamilton was an important 19th century Irish mathematician and physicist who made important contributions to mathematical physics and pure mathematics. He entered Trinity College in Dublin at the age of 18, where he studied mathematics and the classics. In 1827, after much academic success, he was appointed Professor of Astronomy, a position which he held until his death in 1865.
