ABSTRACT

Leading an enterprise-wide Lean movement is not an easy job. It is done by Lean Change Leaders, Lean Mavens, and Lean Navigators who drive things with a missionary zeal. They have a steely resolve to get things done despite opposition. While these individuals have respect for people, what is paramount for them is the larger purpose of improving the performance of the organization. If you are someone who believes in maintaining a workplace relationship, this role may not be for you. Remember, in a Lean professional’s life, there could be many conflicting situations if the Lean professional needs to do things that might cause tension and make those around him upset. The Lean professional cannot avoid those occasions or put them down to avoid spoiling a relationship. Or, there could be times when you have to call out or facilitate decisions that disturb people’s current state. All of these create a lot of disruption in relationships. There are those who would say that they believe in influencing things by being friendly. But, when you want to get things done, because of your personal relationship, more often than not you will struggle as a Lean professional. You will find it difficult to make the required tough calls as your friendship will be in the way-and you will turn out to be an ineffective Lean professional.
