ABSTRACT

We all know that a management information system (MIS) is a mechanism for collecting, processing, storing, and disseminating data in the form of information to facilitate the functioning of the management and allow proper decision-making. However, does your company have problems of too many MIS reports or management reports? Are reports generated by every function and department? Are reports prepared, but no one looks at them? Are MIS reports generated at the drop of a hat or with every change in leadership? All these are symptoms of deep waste in an organization. Multiple MIS reports generate a large number of problems in the organization; not only do they elaborate waste but also they have knock-on effects, such as the following:

• A large amount of confusion on definitions or interpretations • Wasted energies in defending or holding one’s turfs or reports • Man-hours wasted in preparing reports that have little value • Information technology (IT) storage space wasted to store data that

are of no relevance • Questioned data sources and data integrity issues raised • Faulty decision-making

So, how does one go about resolving this problem? This can be effectively done by following the approach listed in Table 39.1. Do a detailed dissection through Lean methodologies and populate this template.
