ABSTRACT
ERYSIPELAS This is an infection of the upper half of the dermis with a group A β-haemolytic streptococcus (Streptococcus pyogenes). The patient becomes suddenly unwell with a high fever and rigors, associated with a well-defi ned red swollen area with central blistering. No obvious portal of entry for the bacteria is seen, which distinguishes it from cellulitis.
