ABSTRACT

In this workbook, we demonstrate the use of the Stata statistical software package to answer some of the questions. Learning statistical software is not the purpose of this book, but we introduce the use of statistical software to answer questions as students learn statistical concepts. Statistical software is a key tool in statistical analysis, and we use it as such in this book similarly to how other math texts would use a calculator. This introduction to Stata assumes that the user has no prior experience and starts with an explanation of technical aspects such as layout of the program and menu navigation. The chapter also discusses importing, opening, creating, and saving datasets. We show how to use a do file editor for saving command-driven Stata code and how to use log files for saving Stata output. An introduction to data editing/cleaning, variable generation, data labeling, descriptive statistics (Chapter 1), and graphic methods is included. Stata datasets (with codebooks) used in this lab and throughout the text are available for download from the book website.
