ABSTRACT

Life is somewhat like when you are on a boat and there is a wind blowing. You cannot control the wind, but if you set your sails right, you can get to your destination.1

Increasing training capacity in order to increase GP numbers is and will remain a priority for deaneries, PCTs, WDCs and government. Training capacity is dependent on two components: hospital SHO posts recognised for GP training and GP-approved trainers and their training practices. To increase one without the other risks chaos. A personal enquiry was carried out to discover what stops GPs becoming trainers in the SE London sector, as a project completed by the author for her postgraduate certificate of education. A summary of the findings was presented to a workshop at the 2002 UKCEA conference and forms the basis of this chapter.
