ABSTRACT
The problem of assessing the performance of doctors is clearly taxing many of us in the UK. At the 2002 UKCEA conference the subject generated a great deal of useful discussion on the present state of play and what departments of post graduate GP education can hope for in the future. I have tried to set out both the basis on which our work in these departments is founded, and the practical applications of particular assessment tools.
