ABSTRACT

Counselling session 10: Tuesday 7th July ^ Ali draws a ‘map’ of his structure of self Charlotte was sitting in the counselling room waiting for Ali to arrive and wondering how he would be. She was glad that he had taken to the relaxation visualisation at the end of the session, it had seemed to help him. He was clearly living on an edge within himself and it seemed that it did not take much for him to feel perhaps in some sense overwhelmed. She wondered whether his having spent a lot of time in his room had a¡ected him. Whether he was now very sensitive to noise and movement, stimulating or over-stimulating environments where there was a lot going on. She had seen this with clients in the past, particularly those who had used a lot of suppressive or sedating substances. They could feel so overwhelmed. How many people had she seen who could not bear large supermarkets, how they seemed so easily at the mercy of panic attacks.
