ABSTRACT

In this chapter we consider the exchange of energy for an inviscid gravity current (or intrusion) which is released from a lock and then propagates over a horizontal boundary (or plane of neutral buoyancy). In § 5.5 we discussed some essentials of this problem in the framework of a two-layer SW model for the unstratified ambient. Here we generalize the topic by also considering effects due to stratification in the ambient and results of Navier-Stokes finitedifference simulations. (On the other hand, here we use a one-layer shallowwater model.) The energy “dissipation” problem for a steady-state current, or about the nose jump, has been considered in Chapters 3 and 14.
