ABSTRACT

In view of the multiple factors that cause insomnia (chap. 10), the availability of a variety of treatment approaches is essential. An array of management strategies for insomnia has been identified and demonstrated to be effective. The treatment options identified for primary insomnia generally also apply for comorbid (secondary) insomnia but at times are not sufficient (Table 12.1). When insomnia is associated with another disorder, for example, bipolar disorder or obstructive sleep apnea, treating the underlying condition is necessary as discussed in chapters 8 and 14 (1).
