ABSTRACT

SLEEP AND EPILEPSY Sleep and epilepsy are intimately related. It has been known since antiquity that seizures occur commonly at night, but the explanation had to await an understanding of cerebral neuronal activity during sleep. Certain seizure types arise almost exclusively from sleep, and nocturnal seizures may mimic parasomnias. Epilepsy results in changes of sleep architecture, whereas anti-seizure medications have varied effects on sleep and wakefulness.
