ABSTRACT

Just as acute stroke care has been revolutionized by the introduction of rtPA, stroke prevention also needs a paradigm shift. Stroke prevention now goes beyond prescribing aspirin and (in selected cases) carotid endarterectomy. Randomized trials have shown the effectiveness of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and anticoagulation, and a role for statin agents in stroke prevention.
