ABSTRACT

Treatment is usually given soon after diagnosis for patients with all kinds of acute leukemias, chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), high-grade lymphomas and myelomas and some patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and low-grade lymphoma. In most patients with CLL and low-grade lymphoma, treatment is usually only required in the more advanced stages because there is no evidence that treatment early in the disease is beneficial. This is in keeping with the over twenty centuries old teachings of Hippocrates, who admonished doctors that, above all, they should do no harm to the patient.
