ABSTRACT

Fragmentation of information systems (ISs) and their limited interoperability significantly compromise further development of the health care system and adversely affect the quality of the health care services in Slovenia. Surmounting these challenges requires the intensified implementation of the e-health project including an integrated health information system (HIS), which is one of the most compelling objectives of the Slovenian public sector. Employing a case study approach, this chapter presents the review of e-health projects in Slovenia, Austria and Denmark, and provides a comparative analysis of the e-health development in designated countries. The case study is based on the structured interviews with fifteen prominent experts from the Slovenian health care system. Stemming from the Slovenian experience, this chapter summarizes the main deficiencies in the current e-health settings, and finally outlines a set of applicable guidelines for effective development and implementation of highly intricate e-health projects.
