ABSTRACT
The colonic segments are named with respect to the direction of peristalsis. The ascending colon is the right-sided portion commencing from the caecum. The ascending colon becomes the transverse colon at the hepatic flexure and continues to the splenic flexure. The descending colon runs on the left side of the abdomen from the splenic flexure to the sigmoid colon.
