ABSTRACT

The next step is one of the most difficult transitions in the process of care. Studies have consistently shown that patients want to be given information and doctors underestimate the amount of information patients want to receive.1 The patient communication literature has reached no consensus about how that should be done. In fact, we believe there is no ‘one best way’ because every patient is different. In this chapter, we will be sharing methods that we used successfully, but they are only our recommendations as the literature is inconsistent.
