ABSTRACT

LEARNING ABOUT ACCESSING INFORMATION Using Google Scholar while Foraging for Therapy Information As demonstrated previously, we will rely on Google Scholar, using all of the specific search techniques discussed in Chapter 3. As we mentioned, technology changes and at this point we are using Google Scholar. During the writing of this book, a new search engine, BING, was launched. We tested using the search terms both in the diagnosis section and in the therapy section. In the first instance we got only consumer related sites and none related to original research. For the therapy section, we did get some scholarly journals, but the relevance of the articles was very low. Remember that we liked Google Scholar because the specificity of the search results was so high. For the foreseeable future, Google Scholar seems to be in the lead. Remember, this is where keeping up to date with new technologies is vitally important – who knows what technological development will replace Google Scholar. It should be pointed out that the actual scholarship parts of the process will maintain their relevance, so learning this method is still based on the doctor-patient relationship and the ability to access and manipulate, analyze and apply information at the site of care for the benefit of our patients.
