ABSTRACT

Weed control in cassava fields appears to have received highly variable levels of attention on different continents where cassava is grown, despite clear messages from farming communities on its importance. From Nigeria, Agumagu et al. (2008) reported major problems affecting cassava farms as identified by respondents in the following order of importance: weeds (grasses (88%), broadleaf weeds (66.6%)), rodents (64.1%), other animals (63.3%), cassava root rot (53.9%) and insect pests (48.7%). Although grasses and broadleaf weeds were perceived as the major problems, the crop is one of the few without concrete chemical and mechanical weed control options.
