ABSTRACT

Increasing agricultural production in sub-Saharan Africa is likely going to be the result of intensification and area expansion (Vanlauwe et al., 2014). Maize production in Africa is intensifying because of demand and perhaps increase in population. Yields of maize is however, quite low despite the availability of improved varieties that are tolerant to biotic and abiotic stresses. For maize, nutrients, especially nitrogen fertilization, should be the focus in increasing the productivity in Africa. Response to fertilizer is however dependent on good weed control and availability of water. Supplementary irrigation and deployment of drought-tolerant maize varieties would help in improving maize productivity.
