ABSTRACT

The history and use of haploids, and double haploids in plant breeding is discussed in detail in a recent review article by Dwivedi et al. (2015). The breakthrough in the exploitation of haploids for plant breeding came in the form of a major discovery of haploid induction through interspecific crosses in barley (Kasha and Kao, 1970). In inbreeding species (such as wheat), DH is used in variety development and, in outbreeding species, it is most commonly used in line production for hybrids. Today, the preferred method for DH production in wheat uses the in vivo method (based on interspecific hybridization) of wheat-maize or wheat-barley.
