ABSTRACT

Methods for the administration are described above (Section 5). In addition, the possible influence of antimicrobials on the efficiency of CE (Section 8) should be considered. It is well known that in particular oral use of antibiotics to treat bacterial infections in both animals and humans can adversely affect the intestinal microflora of the host. Therefore, it is obvious that the continuous use of growth-promoting antibiotics, which has coincided with the appearance of bacteria with multiple drug resistance (Ginns et al., 1996; Khan et al., 2005; Simjee et al., 2007), may also interfere with the effect of CE. On the other hand, the concept may be used to ‘normalize’ the intestinal flora when antimicrobials have temporarily been used to treat infections (Johnson, 1992; Reynolds et al., 1997). Also in humans, the transplantation of faecal microflora has recently been found to be an effective measure to treat Clostridium difficile infection, a well-known serious side effect of certain antibiotics (Rao and Safdar, 2016).
