ABSTRACT

Globally, there is a wide range of sheep production systems, each with its own potential animal welfare issues. Each system has different production objectives (i.e. sheep product), prevalent breeds, housing, handling and management features. These production systems include small traditional shepherding systems found in many countries, larger indoorhoused flocks kept for dairying purposes, feedlot finishing systems in Australia and the United States, and large extensive meat and wool production systems found in Australia, New Zealand and South America (FAO, 2011; Montossi et al., 2013; EFSA, 2014).
