ABSTRACT

In advance of discussing the use of NSP’ases in swine nutrition it is worth highlighting the current state of the art in understanding of the relevance of NSP in digestion. A recent and excellent review of this topic has been published by Bach-Knudsen (2016), which highlights several salient points. The most relevant points with regard to this chapter are listed below:

1 The functional effects of fibre do not correlate well with the chemical measurements. Fibre now includes NSP, RS, lignin, oligosaccharides and waxes. Thus simply categorising the NSP content of an ingredient or diet is likely not of much value.
