ABSTRACT

Sugarcane produces the highest biomass yield among the world’s four most produced crops (rice, wheat, maize and sugarcane), and is ranked third in quantity of plant calories in the human diet (Moore and Botha, 2013). As a result of its very high biomass production, well-established farming, harvesting and processing technologies, sugarcane is a leading candidate for bioenergy production and as a feedstock for bio-refineries.
