Soils are complex bodies formed on the land surface consisting of liquid, gaseous and solid components. They contain inorganic and organic materials, including a large number and variety of living organisms. They must be used carefully in accordance with their resilience and elasticity for the long-term maintenance of key properties and processes of the soil, if they are to meet the demands of a growing world population (Lal and Shukla 2004).
