Etiology The broad spectrum of organisms involved in infective endocarditis (IE) includes bacteria, fungi, mycobacterium, rickettsiae, chlamydia, and mycoplasma. However, the most prevalent infections are those of streptococci, staphylococci, enterococci, and Gramnegative coccobacilli (Karchmer, 2001) (162).
