ABSTRACT

Ablative, or lesion, surgery utilizes a heat probe to destroy small areas of brain tissue. The usual sites are the thalamus (thalamotomy) and the globus pallidus (pallidotomy).

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a relatively new, approved procedure that utilizes an implantable device (102), which may be used in place of, or in conjunction with lesion surgery. The DBS device consists of three parts: an

implanted pulse generator (IPG), a connecting wire, and a lead – which has four electrode contacts.
