ABSTRACT

The etiology of dermatological conditions that affect the female genital tract remains incompletely understood. The prevailing evidence suggests an autoimmune pathology involving humoral and/or cell-mediated responses to components of the skin. The possible involvement of bacteria or viruses in initiating the original immune response leading to development of autoimmunity has also been postulated and associations with specific microorganisms have been inconsistently observed. However, no specific microorganisms have been definitively involved in the pathogenesis of a particular dermatological condition.
