ABSTRACT

Trachoma is one of the most common diseases in the world. Although it is localized in distribution and is declining in both incidence and prevalence, it remains a significant cause of blindness worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) in 2002 estimated that nearly 4% of all blind people (1,350,000 people) were blind from trachoma. The rates of active infection are declining because of the implementation of the SAFE strategy (described in this chapter), improved hygiene, public health education, and national campaigns.
