ABSTRACT

Conjunctivitis is a general description, often used imprecisely, that covers numerous different types and causes of conjunctivitis. ‘Conjunctivitis’ is one of the most common ocular diagnoses recorded for patients presenting to rural outpatient clinics in many developing nations. An accurate diagnosis for each patient with conjunctivitis must be made before appropriate treatment can be instituted. Antibiotics are often given to patients for conjunctivitis when treatment is not necessary. (Refer to Appendix A for a comparative description of conjunctivitis and other causes of red eye.)

Non-purulent conjunctivitis Non-purulent conjunctivitis is characterized by pinkish or reddish conjunctiva.
