ABSTRACT

Horses have voices, but they are not noisy, very vocal animals. Indeed, spending some time with a herd of horses contentedly grazing and socializing together will result in an observer realizing just how quiet they are with each other. Horses can hear higherfrequency sounds than humans, and their vocalizations may contain high-frequency harmonics, which they can detect and which may be relevant in communication. Humans can hear slightly lower-pitched sounds than horses. Elephants make low rumbling infrasounds, but horses do not appear to make high ultrasounds.
