ABSTRACT
While many hundreds of fish species are maintained in captivity, the bulk of pet fish fall into four basic categories: marine tropical species; koi and goldfish; freshwater tropical species; and freshwater temperate species. There are four major sources of pet fish in the ornamental fish industry. They include the following: wild caught and shipped immediately; wild caught and conditioned or ‘grown out’; indoor aquaculture; and outdoor aquaculture. In some cases a combination of the above may be employed.
