PREOPERATIVE CONSIDERATIONS ANALGESICS Analgesic drugs are administered to increase comfort and reduce stress in all cats with fractures.

Preemptive balanced analgesia is used before surgery to prevent the ‘wind-up’ of pain, reduce drug dosages and complications, and achieve a synergistic analgesic effect. Opioids, α2-adrenergic agonists, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are often used (see Chapter 3)1-7.
